Canvas is much more affordable, but it doesn't take paint nearly as well as linen. This one was the exact opposite. I started large, and was not happy with the piece, and put it aside for about 2 years. Recently I started it up again on a smaller canvas and was pleased with the progress, and ultimately the finished piece. It just goes to show how important spontaneity and timing is in art. Although developing certain habits and practices are important, it's important for me to not become too formulaic or predictable in my approach.

Oldie but Goodie

I don't have anything new to show, but here's an older painting that still holds up to my new work. Many towns claim to be "art towns", but Easton is the real deal. Not only do they host a plein air festival every year, but they celebrate art every day with many great art galleries, an art museum and live music pretty much every night. Not to mention fantastic scenery that is truly inspiring. We even stopped in and said hi to my friend, Nancy Tankersly at the South Street Gallery. She is the owner and a fantastic artist in her own right.

Inspiring scenery, a great art community and friendly locals make Easton my new favorite spot in Maryland!

Football!

I'm really happy that the players and owners worked their differences out, and am looking forward to the upcoming season. Few other wet mediums allow for such quick setup and clean-up. That said, few other wet mediums are as confounding as watercolors! I enjoyed working on this one, but it is not at all what I had intended. I added the inking about halfway through, at a point where I was ready to throw it in the trash. Perhaps I should take a class from my friend, Bruce Hanford -- a brilliant watercolorist, and member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters. Here is a painting I finished recently, entitled "The Red Bench". It's a great spot that I used to jog past when I worked in north Portland. This one hangs in the Ryan Gallery in Lincoln City. I was back in the studio today as a nice Father's day present, as I've been really busy with work and kid's sports lately. My work had been accepted by the Ryan Gallery in Lincoln City, so I decided to take the family to the coast and drop my paintings off in person. Since the gallery is right on Highway 101, the first thing I did upon arriving in town was unload my work, then we had the rest of the weekend to play in the surf. On the second day, I realized I had forgotten to get a signature on a document. Upon arriving back at the gallery, I was informed that the above piece, the "Red Door" had sold. It hadn't even graced the gallery walls yet! Needless to say, this made our trip that much better.

Next time you're in Lincoln City, stop in and say "hi" to Victoria and Emily over there, they're truly great people to know!

Back in Town

I recently returned from a business trip to the west coast, and am hoping to get back in the studio on Thursday and Friday. Thank you so much, isn't it shameful that I had to sink to that level to get you here? Since you are here, this is a preview of a painting I've been working on for a couple of months now. It's a complete leap outside my comfort zone to paint even a single figure in a painting, let alone 7! I'm pretty happy with it, and yes I do have to give credit once again to my hero, Edward Hopper. This was a delightful scene witnessed in Baltimore's Little Italy, which is fantastic if you ever get a chance to go. If you do, you absolutely must get a cannoli at Vacarro's, it will forever change you.

Finally!

This is the painting that I was beginning when I first started this blog. My intention was to photograph it and blog about it as I was working diligently away at it. Well, I lost interest in it (surprise!) and nearly painted over/threw it out the window a number of times. The thing that kept me going was how much time I had invested in it. Needless to say, I am happy that I persevered, if for nothing else than the tree in the foreground that I'm very happy with.

If you're interested, you can dig back through my previous posts to see some of the in-progress photos and the original concept sketch.

Finished!

I finished one of the larger pieces I've been laboring over today, a spot just north of the Maryland/Delaware border on the Atlantic Ocean. This one ended up going in a very Impressionistic direction for a couple of reasons. First, the path really lent itself to being painted that way, due to the all of the footprints in the sand. Also, my surface became a major challenge as I was finishing, it must have gotten water on it somehow. I was actually ready to wipe it down at one point, but had spent too much time on it to throw in the towel. Not that I've never tried it, but I am really interested in learning how to weld. There's something very primal about the need to fuse things together that nature never intended. While sitting in a seemingly endless day of meetings, the bagless lawnmower chair idea hit me. It wouldn't be very comfortable, but the beauty of art is it doesn't need to be functional. Now, I just need to learn how to make it...

What inspires you?

Did I say I love baseball? I'm not sure if it's because I'm cheap or what, but I'm finding that I need to apply more layers of paint later and end up using about the same amount as I would have had I just been more liberal in the first place. I can't say that I've fully adopted that mantra, but I'm certainly trying.

Today's painting is one I did of our family dog for my daughter, entitled "Chloe".

On the Menu Today: Introspection

Doing graphic art professionally and having just returned from a week long business trip, I'm reflecting today on the difference between the two types of art I create. The names alone would give great differentiation between fine and graphic art, but even beyond that there is the distinction between creating art for one's own needs and for someone or something else's bottom line. I must admit that I enjoy both, but still find the fine art side much more intimidating. Maybe I can attribute that to the fact that when I paint it's coming from a place that's real inside of me, a place of vulnerability. Graphic art, although still created by me, more often than not is stripped away of the vulnerability as a result of it's very nature. I am not creating it for me, my own worst critic.

Today's painting is "Peninsula Park", watercolor on paper.

Still Life Painting

Elio Camacho, a friend and artist I highly regard often stresses the importance of doing still life paintings when not afforded the opportunity to paint en plein air. So many times I find myself painting from photographs or sketches when in the studio instead of forcing myself to paint from life. It's so much easier to see the subtle differences in value, form and color temperature when painting from life. Learning to actually "see" what life is presenting to us and successfully rendering it is something that I often miss when working from a photograph or sketch. Above is one of my best still life paintings.

Leavin' Town.

The paints are packed away, the canvases put aside to dry, in fact the studio is closed up so the dog won't lick my paintings again. Yes, reluctantly I'll be flying to Texas on business soon. This means I did some digging to find some art to post. I came across this piece, which was one of my finer attempts during a transitional period in my art life. I was realizing that just being a designer wasn't enough, and was hoping to bridge the gap with just pencil drawings and Photoshop. Digital fine-art they call it. Although I put nearly 2 years of my life into it, none of these ever saw the light of day. The reason? Digital work was too technical, with no room for spontaneity. Although I like this piece for sentimental reasons, most of them I see as merely stepping stones to what I'm chasing now.

Late Night Conversation

Night scenes have always inspired and frustrated me. I subscribe to Van Gogh's assertion that darkness can be as colorful, if not more so, than daylight. This doesn't mean that I've been able to effectively capture it, hence my frustration. I feel pretty good about this one though, a little 5"x7" painted with colors leftover on my palette plus a color I rarely use: cobalt blue.

Different Styles

Along the same lines of my previous post, here is a sketch I did years ago of an old friend. The necessity to create art often strikes when I'm ill-prepared, and this was done on a piece of cardboard which was all that was handy at the time. I'm currently fascinated with street artists such as Bansky and Shepard Fairey, which is why I revisited this one. Although my current work is nothing like theirs, or even this sketch, it's certainly something that continues to intrigue me.

Splatter Painting à la Jackson Pollock

Sometimes it's fun to do art in a style completely different from my own. It's even better when I get my 8 and 11 year olds involved for a Valentine's day present for the wife. When I taught art (K-8) in Oregon, this was a project reserved only for the 8th graders, which is easily understood given the mess. A lot of fun, and I really like the results, hopefully she will too!

The Beach House

Shortly before my family and I left Oregon, we paid one last visit to the Oregon coast with two of our closest friends and their kids. We stayed in Seaside, wandering around the town one particular sunny and seasonably warm afternoon, and ended up stumbling upon this house. We had the opportunity to go in and look around, as it was for sale, of course talking about how nice it would be to have a house on the beach that would force us to come visit frequently.

Seems like paintings always turn out better when there is a sentimental significance to the subject. Having a few hours to kill, and not wanting to work on any of the paintings I had in progress, I was having a hard time deciding what to do. Then I remembered something that my friend Celeste Bergin posted on her blog awhile back - start a small painting and force yourself to finish it. This was a great exercise, and I'm really happy with my little 5"x7"! Sometimes it's just a matter of continuing your craft forward and not thinking about making a sale. Art is a journey, not a destination.

Almost There

Here is an update on the Solomon's Island piece, as I worked on it today. I'm really dialing in the colors and values, refining edges and making everything work together. My biggest challenge on this one has been the closeness in value and color of the blues in the house trim and the shadows that fall on the house. This past Sunday, I painted with the Washington Society of Landscape Painters. A very friendly and prolific group, I really enjoy working alongside such accomplished and talented painters. My favorite part is at noon everyone breaks for lunch and a lively critique that always leaves me feeling more focused on my strengths and areas that need improvement. The above painting is what I painted with them down near the C&O Canal in DC, one that I may choose to pursue further.

Sources of Continuing Inspiration

Monet had his haystacks, Degas his ballet dancers, and it seems my home state of Montana has become an overflowing spring of inspiration for this painter. Last summer, my family and I visited on two occasions from our home on the east coast. Since that time, I have painted the three paintings above, and I count them among my best. Throw in a family hardship (my grandmother's passing), and it's a recipe for success apparently. Especially if you consider that I'm painting the southeastern part of the state, not exactly the most picturesque part!

In any event, sometimes you stumble onto something that just works. When that time comes, I've learned to hold on with both hands and ride it for all it's worth, because often times this sort of inspiration and prolificacy is quite elusive.

Done! The train reflecting on the mighty Columbia with it's red and gray cars always inspired me. I've been working on this one for months, and put it down for some time because I wasn't happy with the way the water looked. I revisited it today, and think it's done. I still think the rest of the scene is painted better than the water, so I'm torn between saying it's done, spending more time on it, or even just painting over it altogether. In most cases, there comes a point when I decide if a painting is worth continuing on with or walking away from. This one wasn't an easy read.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://trumanfreshour.blogspot.com/2011/01/done-maybe.html' title='Done! It's a painting I started on location in November that I've been meaning to complete. It's about done, just one more session should do it. I usually have between 4 and 6 paintings in progress in studio at one time. This way I can be assured that I'll find one on any given day that will suit my mood. Otherwise, I have ideas in my sketchbook to pull from.

Back to the Studio.

After most plein air adventures, I am usually pretty remiss about returning to the studio. This time, however, the comforts of my warm and cozy studio are just fine with me. I just love the difference between the two. Working with a finish line in mind in the outdoors as opposed to toiling away endlessly in the studio on a piece that may or may not ever be completed.

Working in plein air has made me much more efficient in the studio, and has taught me how to see nature and life. Eugene Boudin, Monet's mentor, reinforced the importance of plein air to him time again, and I am beginning to understand why.

My palette is the same indoors and out, and from left to right my current selection is this: phthalo green, veridian green, phthalo blue, ultramarine blue, quinacridone red, orange (mixed myself with cadmium red and cadmium yellow), yellow ochre, cad yellow, titanium white. I also keep a bit of ivory black for quick darkening, but prefer to use my mud for grays (bottom left). I've been using straight linseed oil as my medium lately, but sometimes I will add Gamblim Galkyd Lite if I want a really thin mixture.

Painting in the Snow!

After about a month of talking about it, and complaining about not being able to do it, I finally made it happen. I set up on a patch of frozen creek, which allowed me great access to the scene, but it also led to me stepping in the creek unwittingly when stepping back to survey my painting. This made me wet and cold sooner than I had hoped, forcing me to cut my session short. Other than this small inconvenience, it was a great experience! I've painted snowy scenes in the studio before, but actually seeing in person all the colors that a blanket of snow reflects is what I was looking for. Plus, I had some friends hanging out with me as I painted (the ducks).

Good session.

After having to drag my self over to the easel and not being able to actually sling paint last week, I'm happy to report that I had a great session in the studio today. As much as I love to paint, and think about it all the time when I'm not doing it, it is often difficult to sit down and paint. Today I quieted all the inner voices, picked an in-progress painting and went to town. It felt great, and I'm looking forward (as I've stated and re-stated) to getting outside and painting in the snow soon. The last couple of flurries we had didn't leave enough on the ground, but this next storm seems promising.

One of Those Days.

Puttered around in the studio today, reclaiming canvases and sketching. Couldn't actually bring myself to throw pigment around. The negative self-talk was really loud today, making it difficult to focus. Overall, I think it's a good start. I need to work on the values of the house, and need to ensure I'm not getting too "pastel" with my colors. I'm thinking of how Hopper simplifies his shapes and colors when painting this type of scene.

I'm actually a little excited about doing a painting like this. That is, photographing it and analyzing it along the way. It's interesting how he balanced being a commercial artist with his desire to be a painter. I feel quite a connection with him in that regard. My freelance design business is finally taking off, but it's cutting into my painting time. I am grateful to finally be able to do both, but finding that balance is key. Hopper was gaining notoriety as a commercial illustrator, yet his paintings were going unnoticed by the fine art world. He kept painting, actually resenting the work he had to do as an illustrator (which was paying his bills).

Here is a painting I did in the style of the great Edward Hopper, entitled "Storm Moves Out".

Back at it.

Really looking forward to getting back in the studio this week. The early masters put great stock in their preliminary sketches, or "feuille d'études". This is an opportunity to work out any kinks in an idea before going to the final painting. In mine for instance, you'll notice the grid lines, which are an easy way for me to balance a composition. I also removed any elements that aren't crucial to a successful and harmonious piece, such as the telephone pole, guard rails and such. I also take the time before this drawing to do a series of smaller thumbnail drawings to experiment with different arrangements to see if any of them work better than my initial vision.

Snowy Landscapes.

Yet another day of not painting. Still snow on the ground, and I'm very excited to paint a landscape with snow in it. I haven't done this since the days when I played back recorded episodes of "The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross" on my VCR. So it's been a while. I did get a bit of a reprieve this morning viewing the work of Joseph Farquharson. Yet it's extremely important that I remain creatively focused. I keep my sketch pad close, working on ideas for future paintings and refining compositions. Sometimes it's just a matter of zeroing in on a future painting. I like to have canvases and fully fleshed out ideas ready for when I sit down to paint next. Nothing worse than having the time to paint, yet not having something that inspires me to work on. Above is a photo I took at the eastern shore of the Chesapeake that I am very excited about. This will be my next painting, and I will show my progress right here.

The Art of Not Creating Art.

My blog is going to be about art, and the process of creating art. Inspiration strikes often, and sometimes on a day like today I can't get to my easel to paint. Even though there is a fresh white blanket of snow on the ground and the filtered winter sun is hitting it just right, I cannot paint it. Instead, I will post a painting I completed a couple weeks ago onsite at the Patapsco Wildlife Refuge.
